A Note to Followers

A note for readers of my other blog: Unlike Life as a Great Romance which purports to help you live a romantic life and provides suggestions for activities to encourage the feelings of romance, Live Quietly is focused distinctly on cultivating a quiet life as described in I Thessalonians 4:11-12. My intended audience is Christians and my goal is to offer you each day, however briefly, a bit of the sweetness of simplicity, gentleness, and stillness which so often gets overpowered by the call to be busy. Why Live Quietly?

When I look at so many lives around me, especially the lives of Christian women, I'm troubled by the hurried and harried pace. They seem so eager and edgy; their lives so messy and muddled.

My life is very quiet. I craved gentleness and peace and God has blessed me with it. I relish gentle pursuits, orderliness, stillness, even solitude. Time to consider, to contemplate. These, to me, are blessings that come from knowing God. He has given me rest for my soul, rest for my mind and for my body.

Yet, when I consider the outward expression of the godly life, I often feel my own is lacking by comparison. I've cultivated a small plot of land and am happy with my little garden. Others seek to expand, to till up acres and broadcast the seeds of their witness to the world. Their fervency and energy for the work leaves me feeling ashamed that I am not more outward bound.

So, I turn again to God and He, ever the same, whispers to me : "In quietness and confidence is your strength. . . " (Isaiah 30:15b). There is a time to plant, to search, to speak; there is also a time to harvest, to stop searching and to be quiet.

May we each be granted wisdom to distinguish the seasons of our own lives and the confidence to be still before God in them, to respect and enjoy the variety of gardens on God's lush earth without disparaging or neglecting the one He's given us to tend. And, for those of us so called, may we have the courage to live quietly.
